Instances in which some of us are offended by swears or bad words

Abusive: especially racist slurs or derogatory words; or when directed at you; or when degrading to one’s God
Idiomatic: overboard… too often!
Any swearing in a professional environment
Swearing when in an argument with someone
Swearing in front of little kids
Offense sometimes taken when a young person curses around an older person

The Things They Carried Swearing Policy

While swearing will be commonplace in the book we will be reading, The Things We Carried, it is not acceptable to use while discussing the book. First and foremost, we most always be aware of the rhetorical situation. Our rhetorical situation together is in an academic setting. Thus, we must only use academic words in our discourse about the novel. Swear words are only to be used if reading directly from the book. However, you are not expected to read them if you feel uncomfortable.
